Chapter 11

Liam

Just knowing what she’d given me, that special gift of her virginity, I couldn’t express how elated it made me. I felt a sense of protectiveness toward her that I hadn’t felt toward anyone else in my life.

For the first time, I was on my own, away from the influence of my family, and happy with someone. I couldn’t stop thinking of how amazing she was and how wonderful a relationship would be with her.

We lay there a moment, still catching our breaths and letting the excitement of the night settle. “This is an amazing couch. So sturdy, and perfect for sex.” I chuckled, turning my head to face where she still lay spread out.

She stared blank-faced at the ceiling. “Yeah, it’s perfect.” She glanced over at me, and after her smile faded, I reached out to touch her cheek.

“Damn, you are so beautiful. Thank you for letting me be your first.” I had all intentions of being her last as well, but I didn’t want to be so bold. There was something about her mood that had me taking things easy. She had just done something important for the first time, and I wanted to let her soak it all in and give her the headspace to do so.

But suddenly, she sat up and raked her hands through her hair. It was as if the compliment had set her off. She reached for the throw on the back of the couch and then wrapped it around herself. “Thanks.”

“Am I making you uncomfortable?” I said, reaching for my pants. I didn’t know if lying around her apartment naked was what she wanted. I got to my feet and pulled on my pants. “Do you want to grab something to eat or some coffee? We could talk for a while. I’m sure there’s a lot to talk about.”

She gave a nervous laugh. “Like what? Writing?”

The statement took me by surprise. “Among other things,” I said. “I mean, I thought we might get to know each other. Find out what we have in common. What drives us, feeds our creativity, our passions, what we like to do in our downtime?” I was just throwing things out there that I genuinely wanted to know about her. “I’m sure you have hobbies, right?”

“Yeah, not really. I mean, aside from work, but you probably already know that.”

“How could I? I didn’t even know who you were up until a couple of hours ago.”

She scoffed. “Right. I’m sure Dutch never told you who I was when you asked for that invitation of his.”

“He didn’t.” I was beginning to think that she didn’t like me at all. “You don’t think much of me still, do you?”

“I think you’re a lot of things. Handsome, charming, sexy, and an opportunist.”

“Opportunist?” The word was like a slap in the face, and I couldn’t help but wonder just what opportunity she was accusing me of taking advantage of. “I gave you every opportunity to say no, and I would have honored that.
